SUSTAINABILITY

From the land, with the land, for the land.

Casa Landeiro Wines’ guiding principle is respect for the land, for the natural cycle of crops and harvests, as well as for the place where it is located, for the people who have welcomed it and for the local culture. The practical demonstration of this philosophy of respect for the environment and the place is evident both in the way in which viticulture is carried out in the vineyards of Quinta do Fental and in the recruitment of the field teams.

The cultivation and management of the vineyards follows and applies guidelines that aim for minimal intervention in the plants and the land. For example, during the fallow period (after the harvest and until bud break), the Tapada do Fental land is visited by flocks of sheep from neighboring properties, who take the opportunity to feed on the fresh grass, giving back with the natural fertilizer they leave in their wake. The basic criterion for grubbing up and replanting the vines was to replace dead plants or plants in areas where the vines are having great difficulty surviving. The plots that have been uprooted will now play another role within the property, with other plots of a similar size being replanted with healthy plants, thus optimizing the agricultural occupation of the land and preserving an area of vines roughly equivalent in size to the original: 14 hectares.

The teams that carry out the management and maintenance work on the land, from pruning to harvesting, including green pruning and other minor but equally important maintenance work, are carried out using exclusively local labor. At Casa Landeiro Wines we believe in the importance of stimulating the local economy in various ways, starting with the creation of jobs. This is also a way of thanking the people of Nisa for their hospitality, while benefiting from their valuable contribution and knowledge of the land.
