[ Learn more ]Abundant sunshine, sandy-clay soils, wet winters, wide temperature ranges and short, hot summers: these are the main characteristics of Tapada do Fental's terroir. Situated on a gently south-facing slope, with no elevations or other obstacles between the sunlight and the property, the whole plot is generously bathed in sunshine from sunrise to sunset. In the soil, the prevalence of clay and sand is tempered by other elements that add diversity and are the result of a rich geological heritage, including, for example, quartz, which is abundant in the nearby Serra de São Mamede. As a result of this composition, the terrain varies between sections of high fertility and others where the soil becomes impermeable on the surface. The vines planted in the second type have been and will continue to be lifted and replanted in the plots of the first. Some of these fertile plots had never been cultivated before, so the vigor of the land is expected to be extraordinary.
Of the 14 hectares cultivated with vines, the largest plot is occupied exclusively by the Aragonês variety (5.2 Ha), followed in terms of size by plots dedicated to the various red wine varieties, with a total of 4 hectares (2.8 + 1.2 Ha). In these plots, plantings of the foreign varieties Arinarnoa and Marselan are mixed with the Portuguese Tinta Miúda, and a white is also added: Viognier. There is also the Vinhas Velhas plot, dedicated exclusively to red wines, with almost a hectare of vines.
The white wine plots planted during 2025 (and to be planted in the future, in 2026 and 2027) will largely be made up of the traditional Portuguese grape varieties Arinto, Bical, Malvasia and Sercial, to which they will be added, although in a much smaller number of varieties per variety, varieties from abroad, such as Savagnian, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Tália or Petit Mansegn, among others that will have less weight and expression in the vineyard, such as Riesling, Chenin or Vermentino. In terms of climate, Tapada do Fental benefits from the pattern of the Nisa region, north of the Serra de São Mamede and south of the River Tagus. Here, summers are short, hot, dry and practically condensation-free. Winters, on the other hand, are cool, rich in precipitation and generally cloudy.
The intermediate seasons are characterized by moderate temperatures, with mild weather expected during spring and autumn. Throughout the year, the temperature range is around 10 degrees a day, with the exception of the peak of summer (between mid-July and mid-August), when the difference between the minimum and maximum temperatures is 15 degrees.
